Consumer unit upgrades & fuse board replacements
DGEC carries out consumer unit upgrades, fuse board replacements and fuse box upgrades for homeowners, landlords and businesses across Fife, Dundee, Perth and Edinburgh.
Your consumer unit distributes electricity around your property and contains devices that protect its circuits. An upgrade can improve protection and support planned changes to your installation.
Improve circuit protection
Modern RCD and RCBO protection can help reduce the risk of electric shock from certain electrical faults. We assess the protection your installation needs.
Keep faults contained
Individual RCBOs combine residual-current and overcurrent protection. A fault on one circuit can be isolated without switching off other circuits sharing a single RCD.
Not sure whether your fuse box needs replacing?
We assess what is already there and explain the most appropriate solution. An older fuse box does not automatically mean your property needs rewiring.
Traditional rewireable fuses
No RCD protection
Damage or signs of overheating
Insufficient space for planned circuits
Renovations or additional electrical equipment
Repeated tripping that needs investigation
Tripping can indicate a wiring or appliance fault. Replacing the board alone may not solve it.
A clear process, from start to finish.
We assess the existing board, circuit protection, earthing and bonding, and identify issues that may need attention.
You receive a clear quotation for the proposed board and protection, with any identified additional work explained.
We arrange the work with you and explain the expected power interruption so you can plan around it.
We complete the required inspection and testing, label the circuits and provide an Electrical Installation Certificate.
How much does a consumer unit upgrade cost?
The cost depends on the number of circuits, the protective devices required and the condition of your existing installation. Any necessary fault finding or remedial work also affects the quotation.
We will explain what is included and agree the scope with you before starting. A photograph of the outside of your fuse board and your postcode are a useful first step.
FAQs
Are a consumer unit, fuse board and fuse box the same thing?
People often use these terms for the same part of an electrical installation. “Fuse box” often refers to an older unit containing fuses, while modern consumer units generally use circuit breakers and other protective devices.
How long does a fuse board replacement take?
It depends on the number of circuits, access and the condition of the installation. Testing and any repairs also take time. We will give you an estimated duration after assessing the work.
Will my electricity need to be switched off?
Yes. The supply needs to be isolated for the replacement, and testing may involve further interruptions. We will explain the expected downtime so you can plan for heating, internet access and other essential equipment.
Will I need a full rewire?
Not necessarily. If the existing wiring is suitable and in satisfactory condition, it may be retained. Our assessment and testing identify any work needed; a new consumer unit does not repair existing wiring faults.
What is an RCBO consumer unit?
It uses individual devices that combine residual-current protection with overload and short-circuit protection. This helps limit the disruption from a circuit fault compared with several circuits sharing one RCD.
Will I receive an electrical certificate?
Yes. Following completion and satisfactory inspection and testing, we provide an Electrical Installation Certificate for the consumer unit replacement, including the relevant schedules.
